Thoroughly Modern Millie

January 31, 1921               Carol Channing

Honoring Carol Channing as the crazy acrobatic mother in Thoroughly Modern Millie, just seems the best plan for any Birthday Celebration. Whether it be the stunts she’s doing with her many boyfriends, or her scratchy singing of Jazz Baby, she’s sure to get a place in your heart before the end of the movie, even if you have no idea why she keeps saying “strawberry.”  Julie Andrews plays the thoroughly modern Millie, to Mary Tyler Moore’s prim and proper country girl, only to find out that the guy of Millie’s dreams thinks she’s a guy( short haircut, and purposefully flattened chests will confuse a fella that way, ya know), and prefers Mary Tyler Moore’s delicate flower act better than the modern take.

Opium dens, girl trafficking, and poisonous darts round out this fun film version of the Broadway hit, so if you haven’t seen it, make sure you do. And add your other favorite zany musicals in the comments!

Happy Birthday Carol!
